The Book of Joel

I wanted to reshare a post I did almost exactly 2 years ago. It is from this same week and holds the scripture readings from yesterday. I just love these readings from Joel right before Great Lent begins. Here is my post from 2019. Have a blessed Thursday, friends!

Kindler of Joy!

During this week before Great Lent begins, called “cheese week”, the Church prescribes some reading from the book of Joel on Wednesday. This year the first of the 2 readings caught my attention. Centuries of tradition never ceases to amaze me.

Now says the Lord your God,
“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
rend your heart and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is merciful and compassionate.
He is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy
And He relents from doing harm.
Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave a blessing behind Him—
A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?”
Sound the trumpet in Zion,
Sanctify a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
Gather the people,
Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
