Joy is Thankfulness

One year ago today (and I didn’t do that on purpose), I wrote a post about the book “Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives: The Life and Teachings of Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica”. It is the sort of book that you will read on and off for the rest of your life because there is so much to glean from it.

Recently as I was working on another post I came across a very beautiful quote from that book. One that I needed.

There is so much to be said about being grateful and having a thankful heart. Even Fr. Thomas Hopko puts it in his 55 Maxims. It is Maxim number 29.

“Joy is thankfulness” and being joyful is an expression of thanks. But I think that by being thankful, by forcing ourselves to be grateful or thankful, joy will naturally follow.

In my post on Maxim 29 I wrote a great deal about how gratitude begets happiness (or joy). There are actual research studies that show this. I won’t go into that post again here but if you are interested you can read the post here. (same link above- “Maxim number 29”)

Joy is thankfulness. Thankfulness makes joy.

They go hand in hand.

What are you thankful for today?
