I’m getting ready to launch some new cards and prints in the shop very soon and I am very excited about it. I want to share the story of one of them.
One of my favorite verses is Psalm 118:24 “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
Back in July 2018 I shared with you a story about my childhood in which I share how Psalm 100 was still engrained in my mind due to a song I listened to on a record my grandma gave us in 1977. This Psalm was recited by a group of children and at the end they would shout the last line of Psalm 100 “…and His truth endureth to all generations!” Immediately they would break into song “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. This is the day that the Lord, has let us rejoice and be glad. This the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. Jesus is King. Now let us sing, rejoice and be glad.”
Both Psalm 100 and Psalm 118: 24 have a special place in my heart because of this song. Psalm 100 was turned into one my first notecards in my Etsy shop.
Just this past week I discovered something else about Psalm 118:24. I grew up saying “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
But I discovered a different version of this Psalm and one I like very much. I’m sure I’ve read other versions of this verse before, many times, but for whatever reason my childhood version has stuck in my brain as the “norm”. “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” So, when I ran into the New King James Version last week where two little words are changed, these two little words really stood out to me.
The New King James Version reads, “This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Did you catch that? The two little words?
“This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
There is just something about those two words that brings more of a commanding determination.
“…we will rejoice…” No matter what! I’m determined to.
I need a determined way of looking at my day.
I need this reminder to rejoice for this is the day that the Lord has made, and I will make the best of it. I will be grateful, and I will rejoice in it.
Even in the storms of life, when the sun struggles to break through…”we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

I grew up singing a “This is the day” song too, and it was slightly different than the one you recall. But I also memorized Psalm 100 when I was little! My parents stood is in a row on the living room carpet (I still remember the carpet) and trained us to say it by heart.

I think I know what song you are talking about. “This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made. I will rejoice. I will rejoice and be glad in it. And be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day. This is the day that the Lord had made.

Yes, that’s the one! Although I think we sang it “We will rejoice” rather than “I will.” Which fits in well with what you posted about.
